Group Puppy Training-Train and Socialize Your Puppy

Putting your puppy early into a group training class is a wonderful way to get started with training and socializing your puppy. It is never too early to get started-puppies can begin training at six weeks old. In addition to learning basic obedience training at the best time, your puppy will get valuable benefits from socializing with the other puppies and their masters.

I noticed that the dogs I started training early in group classes grew up to be much better behaved than the earlier dogs I procrastinated starting training with. Before I started taking puppies to class early, I had 2 different aggressive dogs. Before I even started their belated obedience training, they had already developed a serious behavior problem. Since taking my pups to group training classes and socializing them better, I haven't had any more aggression problems.

When the puppy is still living with his Mama and siblings he gets constant lessons in socialization. During the time a puppy still lives with his Mama and litter mates, he gets continual socializing lessons from them, and if he gets out of line, they will let him know it and put an end to it. An example of this is when the Mama dog grabs the offending puppy by the scruff of his neck and gives him a shake and holds him until he calms down and submits entirely. This is how puppy's normally learn their guidelines. Puppies are like kids, and they need some guidance to learn how to behave.

Since your puppy now depends on you for socialization, you need to make sure he is exposed to other dogs and people and reduce the chance  he grows up isolated and aggressive. Since dogs are a very social animal, they enjoy companionship and are less well balanced without it. It is easy to see why it is that a puppy or dog that is kept confined and away from interaction with other puppies or dogs or people is much more likely to become aggressive. I feel that the 2 aggressive dogs I had earlier became that way due to isolation.

Naturally, getting your puppy started early with group training classes is also a great way to begin the basic obedience training. In addition to socializing your pup you will be learning the basic commands and hand signals so you can continue your puppy's training daily at home. Before I took my own puppies to group classes I had dogs that were obedience trained, but just not socially trained. A well adjusted and well trained pet should behave in any social situation. It makes sense that a puppy who had the continuing socialization of group class will be more comfortable around other dogs and strangers as he gets older.

Even as young as 6 weeks your puppy is capable of learning the obedience basics. If you want an example of young puppies already doing tricks, check it out on YouTube.

I think this one tip on taking your puppy to group training classes is probably the most single important step to greatly diminishing the likelihood of having an aggressive dog later on. You can find some group training classes for puppies in your neighborhood-be sure to check first to make sure they use only positive reinforcement techniques. Besides being a great way to get an early start with training and socializing, my puppy and I both loved going to the classes.
