How To Train Your Australian Shepherd
How to stop a dog from jumping may be a concern for you if you are starting Australian Shepherd obedience training with your adult Aussie or puppy. Aussies are devoted, highly energetic dogs and can make great family pets. Unfortunately, if proper Australian-Shepherd training is not done, or if they are left alone for long periods of time, they can become destructive and try their herding behaviors, (which include nipping and jumping) on other pets, small children, and even their owners. While you personally may not mind your Aussie jumping up on you, it may be frightening to other people, especially small children. To train Australian Shepherd dogs, just keep in mind that they are not like other breeds. Basic socialization and dog training to stop jumping may be needed for your Aussies pup.

Many people believe that Aussies originally came from Australia, but that’s not exactly true. It is believed that Basque sheep herders are responsible for bringing the dogs to the USA with herd s of sheep. It is possible that the Spanish sheep herders did not come to America directly from Spain but rather from Australia, which would explain the name.
The breed was then stabilized in the western United States, where the “Aussies” were valued for their work abilities, and for having few puppy behavioral problems. Australian Shepherd dog training at first sought to utilize the breed’s innate characteristics and behaviors that were well-suited for herding. The Australian Shepherd is fast, athletic, flexible, energetic, independent, obedient, and has little or no puppy aggression tendencies.
Incorporating ways to stop a dog from jumping into your Aussie training program is easy. Just keep in mind that to stop jumping dog problems, you need to address the reasons WHY they are jumping. Keep in mind that Aussies are work dogs and are often most content when they have work to do. Keeping your Aussie well exercised and busy should not only help stop dog jumping, but help you avoid puppy behavior problems as well. If you are going to be away from your Australian Shepherd for extended periods of time, giving them a game or activity to do while you’re gone, or having a dog-walker come in to play with them may help. Many advanced dog toys are available for smart dogs like an Aussie. Such toys can help keep your Aussie happy and occupied.
