Using a dog training collar is an effective way to train your dog. A collar is used to teach beginner's obedience training, advanced training, and even training for sport dogs. A Martingale dog training collar, for example, is a low-intensity choke collar. It slips over the dog's head without anything else. It is the plain chain and when it is around the dog's neck the actual collar lies smooth, like a typical dog collar.

If you attach a leash, it can shorten and wrap around the dog's throat.  If you use it properly, it will not tighten too much and hurt the dog.  When a dog wears this type of collar in its tight position, it will not come loose over the dog's head. This kind of dog training collar is also excellent for training in dexterity and is fantastic because it actually permits accurate control without choking your dog.

A limited choke dog collar has a strap made of nylon material that has rings sewn into both ends similar to the choke chain dog training collar. One ring is sewn with a longer material so that it has a few inches of give and not choke your dog.

What to Avoid

Do not use a choke chain collar type because they are not very humane.  In the past, dog training based their methods on leash adjustments and punishments so this type of dog training collar was used to control the dog through force. The action of pulling tightly on the choke chain collar can cause intense neck contractions that make dogs realize something negative is happening. 

This kind of dog training collar can be so tight that it could be used as a force of intense punishment. Typically this kind of training collar is made out of chains, but they have invented ones in nylon webbing.  If your dog's trainer recommends using one this type of dog training collar, change the class. This instructor's theory is based on fear and punishment. Your dog does not deserve that form of training.

The snap-around choke dog training collar is like the new nylon web choke chains, but this one has snaps that go around your dog's neck.  These are very close fitted and are worn up behind the dog's head.  This is so any tug can be rapidly realized without much distress.  Since this dog collar is placed so high on the dog's neck, it helps control the head, so there is minimal force required get the dog to obey a command.
